Q: Who can join the Trade Program?
A: Our program is open to all interior design professionals.
Q: How do I join the Trade Program?
A: Fill out our application online here. Once we receive your application, we will be in touch within 2-3 business days. You'll be asked to complete a W-9 and direct deposit agreement, as well as show proof of your business. From there, we'll be in touch again via email to share your new designer number for order placement and our Trade Program information packet.
Q: What showrooms can I use?
A: All Walter E. Smithe showrooms are at your disposal - 9 showrooms in Illinois, 1 in Merrillville, Indiana, and 1 in Naples, Florida. You can also place select orders through our website. We have dedicated mattress and lighting galleries in select stores. See our Store Locator for more information.
Q: Do I need to schedule appointments in store?
A: You can schedule your visit here and request a specific designer or be paired with one. While appointments are preferred, you are welcome to drop into our showroom at any time. We also encourage you to schedule a showroom tour with a manager for your first visit before bringing clients in.
When you enter a Smithe showroom, please let our staff know that you are a Trade Program designer. You'll be paired with a Smithe Designer who will be available to answer questions, gather pricing and product information for you, and place orders.
Q: Can my clients go into a Smithe showroom on their own?
A: We ask that you always accompany your client for each visit. If they choose to visit on their own, they will be paired with a Smithe designer instead.
Q: How do I earn compensation?
A: Our program works on a commission plan, rather than a wholesale or trade pricing plan. Your client is given the advertised public sale offer, just like any Smithe client. Commissions are paid at a flat 8% rate for the majority of merchandise pre-tax total. Commissions are paid via direct deposit monthly upon order placement.
Q: How do I place orders?
A: The Smithe designer you were paired with will place the orders for you within our ordering system. They will collect payment and signatures from the client at the time of order.
