For four decades, Randy and Barb have called Wheaton their home. They built their dream home there, raised their family, and have successful careers. But as they approached retirement age, this fun, energetic couple wasn’t ready to slow down. They still loved their jobs, were busier than ever with their kids and grandkids, and they still loved Wheaton.

So, they built a new home, less than a mile from their old one. This time, though, they were ready for a new look. They decided on an open concept, clean modern design and a neutral palette. But, there was one problem. The great room just wasn’t, well, great. Sure, the two-story fireplace was stunning, the grey wood flooring was on trend, and the adjoining kitchen spectacular - but no wow factor. They asked for help from Oak Brook Smithe designer Caroline Brown to bring color into their trendy grey palette, and make the room pop without losing the serenity of the monochromatic open concept flow.

Using the clean, contemporary upholstery, Caroline took grey to the next level, adding vivid orange and deep blue to bring in both sophistication and fun. Pulling the color scheme together was the over-sized artwork above the fireplace, and a stunning rug to pull it all together.

They painted the fireplace wall a deep navy to highlight the painting, anchor the room, and provide a sharp contrast for the stonework. They also added a set of mirrors in the adjoining hallway to add interest and sparkle. The adjacent dining room was deliberately kept light and simple, so as not to fight with the kitchen and great room.

Finally, they addressed the issue of the adjoining television room. It was open to the main area, but needed separation without interrupting the flow. Seven foot hedge greenery was placed between the two sitting areas, allowing visual privacy without blocking the area completely.

Randy and Barb are thrilled with their room - it's a showstopper that brings them joy every time they look at it. They admit that the bold choices were a leap of faith for them, but they are glad that they took the plunge.
