why go green?

  • Choosing furniture manufactured with sustainably sourced materials improves indoor air quality by eliminating toxic off-gassing that results from using many synthetic finishes.
  • Utilizing recycled materials and well-managed wood products conserves natural resources and limits the volume of waste sent to our already overloaded landfills.
  • The potential release of harmful chemicals is not only an airborne threat, but also a concern for potable water supplies.  By purchasing more eco-friendly products manufactured without these toxins, consumers are doing their part to minimize this dangerous environmental damage.

why to choose “green”

Comfort   You may not equate eco-friendly with comfort, so it’s important to see what eco furniture has to offer.   You may be surprised that the green option can be comfortable!

Style   You might assume that style is another sacrifice necessary to achieve any level of green in furniture.  Many eco-friendly features are completely out of sight, such as water-based glues and recycled steel spring. “Going green” doesn’t have to compete with getting great design.

Quality   In many cases, the eco-friendly components of furniture far outlast their synthetic and chemical counterparts.  Keep in mind the durability of these materials and the sturdy, lasting quality you’re getting from all levels of green furniture.

Health   From improving indoor air quality to reducing waste that affects the population as a whole, eco-friendly furniture is a choice that contribute directly to a more healthful lifestyle.

Peace of mind   Feel good about what you’re buying, and not simply because you found what you were looking for.  Your purchase is contributing to a greater good.  It’s making a very real, very sustainable difference!

glossary of eco-related terms

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs):  Highly evaporative, carbon-based chemical substance, that produces noxious fumes;  Found in many paints, caulks, stain, and adhesives.  Some eco-friendly furniture lines are now avoiding VOCs by using water-based glues and finishes.

Renewable:  A resource that is replenished through a relatively fast-acting natural process (Hemp and bamboo are examples that are becoming more common in furniture as a renewable resource).

“Green”:  Anything eco-related.

Sustainable:  Actions and product that meet current needs without sacrificing the ability of future generations to meet theirs.  Refers to the desire to provide the best ongoing outcomes for the human and natural environments.

Salvaged Materials:  Reusable materials from carefully demolished and deconstructed materials.  (Examples are recycled steel and wire being used in springing systems, scrap fiber padding for cushions)

Organic:  Anything produced or grown naturally (such as organic cotton, hemp, and bamboo that are used in many eco fabrics).
